A Tribute to Sudden Impact

The Biggest Antlered Whitetail Buck of All Time

Sudden Impact August 28, 2009

We at BioLogic and Farming for Wildlife received some terrible news last week. Some of you knew that Sudden Impact had been darted and had his antlers removed to protect him from an infection that had started in his antlers. Sudden Impact passed away last week due to complications stemming from that infection. Click “Read More” to find out additional information.

In the wild weakness cannot be shown. If an animal shows any sign of debility it is quickly rejected by the rest of the herd, or with some species destroyed by the other members. Through natural selection animals have learned not to show weakness when they are ill. Although Sudden Impact was watched very closely, because he didn’t show any signs of being sick by the time his infection was noticed and the veterinarians got to him it was too late.

I’m sure to some of you who have watched Sudden Impact grow throughout this year this news also leaves you sad. Our thoughts go out to Wilderness Whitetails and the Flees Family.

On a positive note - Sudden Impact did reach the heights that we expected, growing the largest set of antlers ever for a whitetail buck - scoring 492 inches! That is unprecedented and would be simply amazing for a fully mature buck, but remember that Sudden Impact was only three. Just imagine what he could have been if he would have lived to old age. Keep watching, we will have some video footage to show you that was taken shortly before Sudden Impact was darted and his antlers were removed. We’ll also have a summary of his world record set of antlers from start to finish.

A ray of hope still shines. Sudden Impact has passed on his amazing genetics and has two sons that are already over 200 inches. You will all get to watch his legacy here on the Farming for Wildlife website. Thank you for joining us through this amazing journey of antler growth and please join us next year to watch Sudden Impact’s sons achieve their potential.
